storm of stories
(2016)

a celebration of myths, legends, folk and fairy tales
for all ages

'I have never really had a chance to do stuff like this before' — YEAR 6 LEISTON PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL
SoS 2016 was Wonderful Beast’s third celebration of myths, legends, folk and fairy tales and it was brought to life by world-class artists and members of the community, through theatre, opera, storytelling, music, dance, and visual art.

It took place in Leiston and Aldeburgh and provided opportunities and events for a wide age range, from interactive performances for babies and early years, an opera involving school children and students, workshop activities and storytelling for families, to performances of fairy tales for grown-ups by storytellers from the legendary Crick Crack Club.

The festival was rounded off with comic tales told in broad Suffolk in an informal entertainment with step dancing and traditional music. Throughout the weekend there were free art workshops, impromptu music and readings of favourite tales in Story Corner.

participant COMMENTS:

'The kids and I have enjoyed the experience so much. I found it quite emotional in the end!'
—
DONNA GOODWIN, DRAMA TEACHER, ALDE VALLEY ACADEMY

'It’s great fun because we do little warm ups and games. We are going on a proper stage with professional people, with a big crowd. And we’ll sing proper songs that a professional person made.'
-- LEISTON PRIMARY SCHOOL YEAR 6 PUPIL

'I had never played with singers before nor a brand new composition.  Having the opportunity to play it with the composer was fantastic and I felt very privileged. I was treated as an equal and felt that my contribution was valued.'
—
MILLIE CLARK, FLAUTIST, ALDEBURGH YOUNG MUSICIANS

AUDIENCE COMMENTS

'Three children and four adults, rapt. What a wonderful experience.'
-- JACK AND THE TWELVE DANCING PRINCESSES

'Absolutely gripping…great local diversity…I love that so many local children get to be involved…first class, very professional, beautiful music, coordination of children, adults, amateurs and professionals.'

-- THE NIGHTINGALE

'I thought it was amazing, wonderful and magical and I loved that all the children were involved and included. This is our third time to Orla and the Sun. We loved it again, it was brilliant.'
-- ORLA AND THE SUN

Wonderful, evocative, lots of local references, historical and contemporary. Very effective soundscape and use of chorus; great to see a simple story told really well.
