An exciting development of our outreach work with the elderly. Read on...

Over the last year Wonderful Beast (the artistic director, Alys Kihl musician, Sylvia Hallett and two actors, Matthew Prendergast and Tim Downie) has held three sessions of music, storytelling, singing, and reminiscences with four groups of older people in Suffolk day care centres and The Mary Warner Homes. These sessions were linked to Wonderful Beast`s latest production ‘The Dead Moon’ featuring smuggling along the East Suffolk Coast, and a local folk tale. The culmination of the project was a special matinee of ‘The Dead Moon’ for the participants of ‘Memories’ at Seckford Theatre, Woodbridge, on July 1, in which the audience joined in singing sea shanties which they had learnt during our visits.

The Show

During our sessions it became evident that the residents of The Mary Warner Homes were so full of enthusiasm, talent, confidence and energy that the next step was to put on a show in which they, the residents, took part. Directed by Alys Kihl, the nature of the event will be a mixture of storytelling, readings, poetry, songs, and reminiscences interspersed with music played by musician, Sylvia Hallett, on harp, fiddle and accordion. Local step dancers and traditional singers, who were guest performers in ‘The Dead Moon’ will also appear in the show. The aim is to offer an experience that would not normally be available to the group and to create an enjoyable and memorable occasion for all concerned. This is a very exciting development of our inclusive and diverse work within the local community.
